Hi, I'm Lara Zwaan and I started this one-women,
made-to-order brand, with a few ONE OF A KIND exceptions called ZWAAN.
Since I was about 14 years old I knew I wanted to study fashion design. After I finished high-school I did. I studied at the AMD- AKADEMIE MODE & DESIGN in Düsseldorf and finished my bachelor degree in 2018. Afterwards I just couldn't descide what maters I wanted to do because the I like the variety that comes with doing everything. So instead I started ZWAAN.

 

With ZWAAN you’ll find all-time classics with a twist, made with sustainable material in an ethical and very local way. I hope to spread some positivity and I’m all about doing my bit without raising a finger. I always try to work out and work on solutions within my range of possibilities.

Eigenlijk zegt deze zin het al. ZWAAN is een klein label. Ik doe alles zelf en heb dus geen groot team om me heen. Just me.

DUURZAAM?

​

Ja zeker! Allereerst kan ik je vertellen dat alle producten door mij zelf gemaakt zijn; van ontwerpen, tot patronen maken en in meerdere maten omzetten, naaien, verpakken en soms zelf afleveren. Van begin tot eind en dat gewoon in Nederland. Om precies te zijn in Zeeland. Duurzaamheid staat in mijn werk centraal. Ik heb geen internationale transportwegen nodig voor mijn productieproces, omdat ik alle productiestappen in eigen hand heb. De stoffen die ik gebruik zijn allemaal duurzaam. Ik gebruik vooral veel GOTS gecertificeerde stoffen, maar ook restlappen die ik ergens heb gevonden of zomaar heb gekregen om er iets moois van te maken. Hoe leuk is dat? LIMITED EDITION stukken of zelfs ONE OF A KIND! Dan koop je dus iets waar er maar één van is, wereldwijd! ​Ook de grotere reststukken, die soms bij het knippen van patroondelen ontstaan, probeer ik hier zoveel mogelijk te verwerken om zo het afval te minimaliseren.

Sinds kort verwerk ik de restlappen van mijn BASIC collectie in de vorm van babytruitjes! Heel schattig, al zeg ik het zelf. Deze zijn te vinden op deze instagram pagina: ZWAAN MINI

COMFORTABEL EN UNIEK?

​

Wat voor mij eigenlijk NO.1 prioriteit heeft als het om kleding gaat, is dat je je er goed in voelt en dat kan alleen als het lekker zit! Hoe mooi je iets ook vindt, als het niet goed zit doe je het niet aan toch?
Voordat er dus nieuwe stukken op de site komen laat ik ze altijd eerst goed doorpassen. Ik hoop dus ook dat je mijn kledingstukken heel vaak aan doet en er lang plezier van zal hebben. Ik zou mijn stijl graag willen omschrijven als moderne klassiekers maar dan op mijn manier. Bij de ONE OF A KIND producten leef ik me altijd wat meer uit. Misschien niet zo zeer in de pasvorm, daarentegen meer in het materiaal en kleurgebruik. Dit zijn ook meestal stukken die ik niet van te voren bedenk. Dit ontstaan gewoon. Dit zijn dus echt stukken die uniek zijn!

TIJDLOOS?

​

Over het algemeen is mijn stijl tijdloos. En dat is ook goed zo, want kwalitatief mooie producten wil je ook lang dragen en bij tijdloze stukken kan dat ook. Zo zal je zien dat er altijd stukken van de oude collectie weer terug komen in de nieuwe collectie. Dit doe ik ook om jou te laten zien hoe je bijvoorbeeld hetzelfde rokje weer op een andere manier kunt dragen. Dus misschien denk je nu bij een rokje ‘dit is niks voor mij’, terwijl je bij de volgende collectie over hetzelfde rokje denkt ‘deze moet ik echt hebben!’. Naar mijn mening is het zo dat veel kleding niet seizoensgebonden is. En dat probeer ik daarom in mijn collecties ook te laten zien. Het tempo in de mode-industrie mag wat mij betreft wat omlaag worden geschroefd en daaraan wil ik mijn bijdrage leveren. Ik werk dan ook niet voor op de seizoenen. Ik werk met ze mee.

TOEKOMSTPLANNEN?

​

Ik kijk graag vooruit en zal jou ook in het kort vertellen wat mijn plannen zijn, zodat jij op de hoogte bent! Ik zal om de twee tot drie maanden nieuwe collecties uitbrengen of de collectie een beetje uitbreiden. Naast deze collecties blijf natuurlijk altijd stukken aanbieden waarin het Zeeuwse schortenbont verwerkt is (zie de basic collectie binnenkort weer online én in de winkel!). Zo probeer ik ook regelmatig nieuwe
ONE OF A KIND stukken aan te bieden. Ik blijf leren en nieuwe ontwikkelingen volgen wat betreft het duurzame. Ik probeer me hierin binnen mijn mogelijkheden te blijven aanpassen en vernieuwen.

This sentence says a lot. ZWAAN is a small label. I do everything myself, so no team around me. Just me.

SUSTAINABLE?

Yes, for sure! First of all, I can tell you that all products available on my site are completely made by me. Starting with the design process, to drawing the patterns, grading these in different sizes (all by hand), sewing, packaging and sometimes I even deliver the products myself. All of is done in the Netherlands. To be exact in Zeeland.
Sustainability is what I focus on. I don’t need international transport routes for the production process, because I do everything ‘in house’. The only thing that has to come from somewhere is the fabric. But the materials I use are almost all GOTS certified. This stands for Global Organic Textile Standard and is one of the highest in the field. I order the fabric at Dutch or German suppliers. Besides the GOTS fabrics I use leftover materials, I sometimes find myself or get given from family, friends or people who support my brand. Sometimes I even use old worn-out clothes to make LIMITIED EDITION or even ONE OF A KIND products! I mix the leftovers with the waste that I have after cutting the regular pieces and try to reduce my waste to a minimum.

COMFORTABEL AND COOL?

 

My first priority when it comes to clothes is that they make you feel good and fit you well. Because in my opinion when the clothes don’t fit well, they can be as pretty as a piece can be but you won’t wear them right?
And I make my clothes with the intention of wearing them a lot!

So before I launch new pieces on my site, I always fit them, preferably on more than just on person. I would describe my style as modern classics my way. The ONE OF A KIND products are mostly a bit more extravagant. Maybe not in shape or fit, but therefore in material and colour. These are items I don’t imagine or design beforehand. I just start making them and they develop themselves. It’s a bit like a puzzle. These items are real unique pieces!

TIMELESS?

 

In general my style is quite timeless. And I think that this is a good thing. Because products made in and with good quality are made to last. And I like to think that I deliver on both. So they should be timeless, otherwise you wouldn’t wear them anymore in a few years, just because they would be out of fashion.
So you will see that I will always take some pieces from the ‘old’ collection with into the new one. Just to show you that there are different ways of styling them. Or maybe you didn’t like a particular piece for the winter collection, but due to the different styling, you do for summer.. Also to make my point in timelessness. Some piece are just good season less pieces. And I try to show that. In my opinion the pace in the fashion industry should be slowed down a bit, and I want to do my bit. I don’t work ahead of the season, I work with them.

FUTUREPLANS?

​

I love to look ahead and so I will tell you a little about my plans. Just so you keep up to date. I try to launch 3 to 4 collections a year. I will always stay true to the basics with the Zeeuws Shortenbont in it.  Besides the collections there will always be some ONE OF A KIND, or LIMITED EDITION products available made from leftovers.
I keep on learning and following new developments concerning sustainability. I try to adapt and develop myself and this brand within my range of possibilities.
